Internship and Residency Program

POLICY ON ANNUAL, SICK, AND COMPENSATORY LEAVE

As an Intern or Resident, you are entitled to annual leave and sick leave benefits similar to other faculty and staff at the University. In addition, you will earn compensatory time for the emergency duties that you perform after-hours in the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital.

This memorandum is to notify you of the way these leave allocations are assigned, and how you may use them during your training period.

1. Annual Leave

Full-time (100%) employees accrue annual leave at 8 hours per month for the first 2 years, and then 9 hours per month during the third year of employment. Annual leave may not be taken during the first 6 months of employment unless you have prior employment with the University. All leave must be approved in advance by both the Head Resident and the Senior Clinician. You must submit your request online through the Leave Traq System.

Interns and Residents are encouraged to take their annual leave during their “off-blocks.”

2. Sick Leave

Full-time (100%) employees accrue sick leave at the rate of 8 hours per month and you are eligible to take sick leave, as needed, from the first month of employment.

3. Compensatory Time

Compensatory time is accrued at 40-80 hours per year for on-call emergency duty. An additional 40 hours per year is credited to faculty who serve during the intersemester breaks. This leave will expire in one year and is posted in July or September each year. Compensatory time may be taken as soon as it is posted.

4. Interns and Residents are not allowed to take annual leave or compensatory time during the last 2 weeks of June and the first 2 weeks of July in any year of their program.

Interns and Residents will not be paid for any remaining leave they have accrued when they terminate.

It is most important that you are aware of these policies at the beginning of your training program. Please read this document carefully, and sign and date the memorandum below to show that you understand these departmental policies, and that you abide by them.
