Job Description
Large Animal Ophthalmologist

This position would be in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences and assigned to the Equine Medicine Section. The position can be either tenure-track or clinical track and, rank as assistant, associate or full professor will be commensurate with the individual’s background and experience.

Teaching
Utilize clinical case material as a means of teaching professional veterinary students, interns, and residents through the Large Animal Ophthalmology Service. Participate in and take a leadership role in didactic lectures and laboratories related to Large Animal Ophthalmology. There are currently assigned Large Animal Ophthalmology lectures and laboratories offered in VLCS 954 and an elective coarse VLCS 948-325 offered to the third year professional students. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in and provide instruction through clinical rounds. Providing continuing education presentations for practitioners in Texas, other states nationally and internationally will be expected.

Scholarship
The College expects that all faculty members demonstrate a significant level of scholarship. Scholarship is broadly defined, but to be most effective, faculty members should have broad-based knowledge as well as focused discipline-based expertise. Scholarship, defined as creative intellectual work that is validated by peers and communicated, can encompass discovery (research), integration (dissemination of new knowledge), integration (application of new knowledge to patient care) and teaching (development of new teaching methods). These requirements are described in detail in the Veterinary Large Animal Clinical Sciences departmental guidelines for promotion of faculty.

The preferred candidate will have board certification in The American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists. If the successful candidate is board eligible, then the completion of board certification is expected in a timely manner.

Other individuals with demonstrated experience and expertise in Large Animal Ophthalmology will be considered and their continued growth in Ophthalmology will be expected.

Patient Care
The successful candidate will be expected to provide clinical service and/or consultation with other faculty to serve the needs of our Large Animal Ophthalmology caseload. Collaboration with Small Animal Ophthalmology and other clinical services to provide optimal patient care is expected. Adequate time for professional growth will be provided.

The successful candidate will supervise veterinary students, interns, and residents that are assigned to the Ophthalmology service. Consultation with other member of the faculty regarding care of Large Animal Ophthalmology cases is expected. Consultation, and collaboration with the Small Animal Ophthalmologist will be available.
           
The successful candidate will be expected to provide leadership that will enhance the qualities and scope of the Large Animal Ophthalmology service and continue caseload development through consultation with practicing veterinarians and continuing education programs.

Administrative Duties and Committee Assignments
The position is assigned to the Large Animal Internal Medicine section. Participation in administrative duties and committee assignments as assigned by Section Chief or Department Head is expected.
