Job Description
Food Animal Medicine Ambulatory Clinician (tenure track)

 

The clinician will be responsible for developing and maintaining the food animal ambulatory services to the local community and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) with emphasis on livestock (primarily beef cattle and meat goats).  This is a tenure track position. The local ambulatory service works closely with the Food Animal Medicine and Surgery Practice.  The clinician will assist in the case load of primary and secondary care delivered by the Food Animal Medicine and Surgery Practice.  The clinician’s academic assignment will reside in Food Animal Section in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences.

Teaching

  1. Provide instruction to professional students assigned to the Food Animal Ambulatory Service utilizing case material as a means of traditional and innovative teaching through clinical service.
  2. Participate in teaching didactic lectures and laboratories as assigned related to Food Animal Medicine in the professional curriculum.  Develop well organized, creative lectures and laboratory materials for assigned courses in the professional curriculum.  There are opportunities to develop Food Animal electives, depending on one’s interest, that are offered in the 3rd year of the professional curriculum.
  3. Provide continuing education presentations and publications for veterinarians locally, regionally and nationally/internationally.
  4. Participate in information delivery of Extension/Outreach Education Program for food animal producers.
  5. Assist in the preparation of students for the pursuit of the expanding role of veterinarians in food production systems.
  6. Support the graduate educational program of the Food Animal Medicine Program.

Scholarship

  1. Expected to engage in scholarly activity required for promotion and tenure.
  2. Expected to develop an externally funded research program.
  3. Expected to participate in collaborative efforts with investigators within and outside of the College of Veterinary Medicine.
  4. Expectied to patient-centered research that will afford the opportunity to integrate his/her clinical activity and scholarship efforts.

Patient Care

  1. Provide clinical service through Food Animal Ambulatory Service.  This service will work closely with the Food Animal Medicine and Surgery Service.  The Food Animal Ambulatory Service will be centered in primary patient care. The focus of patient care will be the continued maintenance and support the development of the local Food Animal Ambulatory Service.
  2. Supervise veterinary students, house officers and graduate students that are assigned to the Food Animal Ambulatory Service.
  3. Provide and seek consultations of other members of the food animal faculty.
  4. Provide leadership that will enhance the quality and scope of the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital’s patient-care program.
  5. Participate with other faculty in rotating emergency services.
  6. Provide consultation for private veterinarians.

Committee Assignments and Administrative Duties

  1. Participate in administrative duties and committee assignments as assigned by Department Head or Section Chief.
  2. Participate in committees of other professional associations as appropriate.
  3. Demonstrate evidence of effective institutional citizenship and collegiality.
