The Advisory Committee for a student shall be selected by mutual agreement of the student and the chosen Major Professor, subject to the approval of the Department Head. For the M.S. degree, the Committee will consist of a chairperson and at least two other members, one of whom must be from another department. The Committee for a student pursuing a Ph.D. degree will consist of a chairperson and at least three other members, one of whom must be from an outside department, plus a Graduate Council representative, who is appointed by the Office of Graduate Studies. Faculty members who are eligible to serve as Major Professors must have the following qualifications: competence in the field of study (a sustained record of publication in peer-reviewed journals, successful extramural grantsmanship, current funding, and a national reputation). a research program sufficiently active to permit the student to complete a thesis or dissertation research project in a timely manner. access to adequate equipment and supplies to support the student's research project.
Responsibilities of the Major Professor
The major professor has the following duties:
To explain to the student the requirements for successful completion of degree program.
To explain the specific requirements needed for satisfactory completion of the planned research.
To supervise and assist in conducting research. This includes molding and monitoring the development of a student to assure that the student acquires competence in the theory and methodology of the research specialty.
To help the student achieve the goals and objectives for Graduate Faculty/Students.
To be proactively engaged in helping the student to obtain placement in a high-quality program (post-doctorate, faculty, or industry) after graduation.
