ABOUT SVECCS |
|
SVECCS is the extraordinarily long acronym for the student organization operated under the guidance of the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society (VECCS). Through various activities and opportunities offered to members, SVECCS strives to advance student knowledge and competence in emergency medicine and critical care. Membership in SVECCS gives you access to an array of educational (and fun!) opportunities, including seminars, rounds, wetlabs, mini-externships, and the Large Animal Emergency Team and Small Animal ICU programs. In response to a tragic College Station barn fire in September 2003, VECCS began the Fesses Salty Memorial Fund to help vet students cover their animals' emergency medical expenses. The Fund is named in honor of "Fesses Salty," our club president, Jennifer Wall's horse, who was fatally burned in the fire. Both small and large animal emergencies are eligible for assistance. The Fesses Salty Memorial Fund has raised money to help three vet students' horses (two fire victims and one colic surgery) thus far. There will be an additional elected position within VECCS in the fall of 2004 which will be responsible for distribution of aid and fundraising efforts related to the Fund. In the meantime, please direct all inquiries to our vice-president, Laura Gill, who is the fund's original creator. Any donations are welcomed with the utmost appreciation; checks can be made payable to "The Fesses Salty Memorial Fund". We believe that membership in any club is only as worthwhile as you make it through your participation. So, as an added incentive for your involvement this year, we are holding a prize drawing at the end of the year. For each VECCS activity you attend, your name will be entered into the pot...so the more active you are, the more chances you have to win! If you wish to participate in Small Animal ICU or Large Animal Emergency Team this semester, we welcome you to do so by joining VECCS this month! Simply print out the online membership form and return it, with $15 dues, to your class representative (or any SVECCS officer). Checks should be made payable to VECCS. Since registration for these two programs closes on January 23, 2004, we ask that you please submit your membership application before this date. We hope that you will find your membership in SVECCS to be a rewarding experience!
