Presentation:
Patient
An 11-year-old spayed female cat named Kaibab.
Date of Presentation
September 11, 2006
Presenting complaint
Intermittent vomiting, diarrhea, and weight loss of two months duration.
History
According to her owner, Kaibab started losing weight gradually two months prior to presentation at Texas A&M University. Kaibab spends most of her time outdoors, and her owner can not tell if her appetite or water intake have changed. Kaibab’s owner has noticed that she vomits about once or twice a week. Each episode of vomiting is followed by a one- to two-day period of anorexia and lethargy. During these episodes of illness, Kaibab appears uncomfortable and irritable at rest and grumbles when picked up. Over the past two months, Kaibab’s feces have become consistently semi-formed, although she does not appear to defecate more frequently than normal. Her owner has noticed no blood or mucus in her feces.
During the past year, Kaibab will have occasional episodes of painful urination when she will urinate in the bathtub. Her diet consists of a dry food from the grocery store that is formulated to decrease the risk of bladder disease. She has received all of her vaccinations on schedule. Prior to presentation to A&M, Kaibab’s referring veterinarian had checked her thyroid function (total T4 - 1.6 μg/dL [0.78-3.82]).
