SUBJECT: Summer Veterinary Student Research Fellowship (SVSRF) Program

Applications are requested for the Summer Veterinary Student Research Fellowship Program, available for summer, 2008.

Eligibility:

  • First- and second-year professional veterinary student in good academic standing are eligible.
  • Prior research experience does not automatically disqualify a student from the program. The following students are ineligible based on their prior exposure:
    • students who are prior recipients of Fellowships.
    • students with advanced graduate degrees in science.
    • students currently enrolled in graduate programs in science.

Procedure:

  1. Application. The on-line application can be completed at http://www.cvm.tamu.edu/SelectSurvey/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=76KK9l8. You will need to provide a user name and password to complete the application. Afterwards, by using the same name and password, you will be able to edit or complete your application.
     
    Deadline: All applications must be complete by 5:00 p.m. Friday, January 18, 2008.
     
    Students from colleges other than Texas A&M are encouraged to apply. In addition to the on-line application, Please request a letter from your Associate Dean providing (1) a statement of your good standing in the professional curriculum at your College, (2) your pre-professional GPA, (3) your professional GPA, and (4) your present class ranking. The letter should be received by Friday, January 18, 2008 and addressed to:

    Selection Criteria. The applications will be reviewed and evaluated on a competitive basis by a Selection Committee. Factors that will be considered are the:
    • academic and extracurricular performance
    • statements of motivation and expectations, and
    • reference.
  2. Notification of Acceptance into the SVSRF Program. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application within 3 weeks of the application deadline. Successful applicants will be provided names of at least three (3) scientists in the student's area of research interest.
     
  3. Mentor Selection and Student-Mentor Agreement (Deadline: Friday, March 8, 2008). The student is to contact the scientists to discuss research projects. One of the scientists should be selected, and a research project outlined for the student. Should there be a problem in selection of a mentor, students are encouraged to contact Dr. L. Garry Adams or Dr. Roger Smith for any questions or assistance.
     
    A signed student-mentor agreement (form attached) should be submitted to Ms. Lisa Garcia, Office of the Associate Dean for Research, Room 101 Veterinary Medical Administration Building, by 5:00 p.m. Friday, March 7, 2008.
     
  4. Research Proposal (Deadline: Friday, April 11, 2008). A brief, one-page outline of the proposed research should be completed, including hypothesis, background, significance, and an outline of experimental design. The proposal should be submitted to Ms. Lisa Garcia, Office of the Associate Dean for Research, Room 101 Veterinary Medical Administration Building, by 5:00 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2008.
