The People Behind the Lab


Vince B. Hardy

Role: Vince, a Research Assistant, directs the technical assistance in Dr. Johnson's laboratory. Presently, he coordinates the daily activities of several veterinary students and undergraduates as well as a technician. In addition to his management skills, he has performed excellently at takes including assistance in preparing chapters, several publications, and grant applications. He is excellent in photographing, printing and mounting/organizing light and/or electron micrographs for publication. His insight and contribution to Dr. Johnson's studies have led to his co-authorship of recent publications. His technical assistance has been acknowledged on original scientific articles more than most of the technical staff in the Department of Veterinary Anatomy and Public Health. Vince's strengths include excellent work/study habits. realistic goal-setting skills, and a fine curiosity of how to get the job done effectively and efficiently. He sets high standards for himself and Dr. Johnson's laboratory and applies his creative techniques to accomplish a high quality of work.

Education: Vince graduated from Texas A&M University and recieved is B.S. in 1987 in the field of Veterinary Science.

Experience: Vince has many years of lab experience with many different projects and grants. He is also knowledgeable with surgery and computer analysis graphics.

Elissa Jackson

Role: Elissa spends most of her time working on regulatory factors controlling spermatogenesis for a project. She also does miscellaneous lab chores.

Education: Elissa will be a graduate of Texas A&M University in December of 200 with a B.S. in Biomedical Science. At this time, Elissa is student in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Texas A&M University.

Experience: Elissa has spent four years working and training at the Lake Travis Animal Hospital prior to a summer of lab work with Dr. Johnson.

Interests: Elissa enjoys spending much of her free time on horse back. When she is not riding horses, she entertains herself with a good novel.

Sara Van DeWiele

Role: Sara does research, library work, runs experiments, and works on special projects. She is currently helping on the PEER Project with Dr. Johnson.  She also runs errands and does other office duties.

Education: Sara is a senior here at Texas A & M and a class of 2001 Biomedical Science Major with a Business Minor who will be graduating in August 2001.

Experience: Sara has worked in this lab for a year now.  She has also worked in veterinary clinics before this.  Her classes for her major have also given her good experience.

Interests: Veterinary studies, general animal care, and biotechnology are her study interests.  Her personal interests include dancing and swimming.

Zane Huber

Role: Executing a case study in ethnic differences in testicular structure and spermatogenic potential.

Education: Zane has a B.S. in Biomedical Science and will graduate from Texas A&M in August, 2000.

Experience: Executed a case study on how grain pollen affects people living in rural settings and urban settings. Article published in the "Annuals of Allergy, Asthma, and immunology." Worked for Dr. Robert Striping and performed dictation on medical charts, vital signs, urinlysis, throat cultures, and breathing treatments. Zane not only job shadowed Dr. James Sterling, but also Dr. Richard Benavides

Interests: Playing tennis, workout, cooking, and reading.

Becki Heck

Role: Process and section tissues for light microscopy and electron microscopy. Currently working with Protein Chemistry Lab on project on factors involved in horse spermatogenesis. This uses electrophoresis, specifically western blots.

Education: Graduated from Texas A&M University, 1997. She then proceeded to get her B.S. in Zoology.

Experience:  Becki has been a technician in Dr. Bruce Riley's Zebrafish Genetic Lab at Texas A&M for one year. Working in Dr. Johnson's lab has been her job since November, 1998.
