Cell Structure I
Light Microscopy
Slide 40 - small intestine, intestinal villus, columnar intestinal absorptive cells, goblet cell, brush border, nuclei, erythrocytes in capillaries. Hematoxylin stains nuclei blue and eosin stains proteins red.
Slide 204 - columnar intestinal absorptive cells, goblet cells, brush border, basement membrane, nuclei, erythrocytes in capillaries.
Slide 265 - Stomach: note PAS staining of mucus cells in glands.
Slide 267 - Small Intestine: PAS staining for carbohydrates. Note the pinkish/purple brush border, and pink line at the base of the cells which is the basement membrane.
Slide 201 - Rat Intestine: Toluidine blue stains most all proteins and nucleic acids at a high pH. Identify structures based on density of staining, shape, and size. Note nuclei and brush border of intestinal absorptive cells. Note the mitochondrial cluster just under the apical surface of the absorptive cells. Note heterochromatin (dark staining) and active euchromatin (light staining).Electron Microscopy
EMs 3, 4, 4b, 4c - Intestinal absorptive cell: Note brush border, euchromatin, heterochromatin, and organelles in the intestinal absorptive cells. Also note the microvilli, glycocalyx, action filaments, plasma membrane, cell junction, and organelles like the Golgi.
