Dr. Rachel Pilla

Rachel Pilla

Rachel obtained her DVM in Brazil in 2008, and her PhD in Veterinary Pathology and Animal Hygiene in 2013 in Milan, Italy. She spent 2 years as a postdoctoral fellow at the Bernhard-Nocht Institut in Hamburg, Germany. After that, she returned to Brazil where she worked for 2 years for a private laboratory as head of the microbiology lab, and independently as a nutrition consultant. Rachel joined the GI lab in September 2017 as a postdoctoral research associate.

Her main research interest is host-microbe interactions, and how the gut microbiome and its metabolites impact health and longevity.

In her free time she enjoys spending time with her husband and their two Italian greyhounds. She is also a volunteer for the South Texas branch of the Italian Greyhound Club of America Rescue.
