Biosecurity
Chile is a unique country because of its natural barriers: the Atacama Desert in the north, the Andes to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the west, and Antarctica to the south. Nevertheless, Chile does employ certain measures to control the import and movement of foreign products. This is exemplified in the following:
No importation of live animals from FMD endemic countries.
Quarantine and
testing of imports prior to exportation out of
another country and again when animals are imported
into Chile.
As of March
13, with the recent confirmation of FMD in Argentina, the
National Director of SAG, Lorenzo Caballero, announced a temporary
suspension of beef imports from Argentina.

The
disinfection of tires, confiscation of plant and animal products, and
enforcement of quality control for importation at borders. |
|
Importation of only frozen, boneless meat products from
countries that are FMD free with vaccination. Trucks carrying cargo are
routed to a station where their products are tested for pH, proper packaging,
and temperature. There is an inspection of 5% of the cargo and if 2 violations are found, the entire
shipment is rejected and returned. |

Establishment of a buffer zone in which no live animals
are allowed; animals found within this zone are slaughtered. This zone is located along the Andean
border; it is expanded during alert status. |
