Comments: The Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center has recently had an intern position open for our 2009-2010 surgical intern program. If you are interested in this opportunity please fax a letter of intent and CV as well as your WIRMP application (if available) to the number above. Our center is a 10 surgeon, small animal referral practice, located in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. We currently operate out of four modern, state of the art, referral hospitals. Three of our facilities share space with a local emergency clinic, and all four provide 24 hour care, seven days a week. All locations are supported by an internist, and other locations are supported by other specialty practices. Our 40,000 square foot facility in Dallas also shares space with a regional branch of IDEXX laboratories. The DVSC is progressive in new equipment acquisition. We currently have three arthroscopy towers, two CT scanners, and also offer a wide array of hip replacement systems including Kyon, CFX and BFX systems. We have a full complement of fracture repair systems, including but not limited to ring and hybrid fixators, locking plate systems, SOP, and interlocking nail sets. We also offer percutaneous laser disc ablation for prevention of intervertebral disc herniation. Interns will rotate through the Dallas and satellite hospitals spending about 25% of the year at each location. The majority of the interns’ time is spent assisting surgeons with procedures. Additional time is spent completing patient evaluations, bandage changes, imaging studies, etc. Interns are responsible, on a rotating basis, for weekend patient discharges, evaluations, and client communication. In addition, interns rotate through overnight, weekend, and holiday emergency duty. Our interns are also encouraged to supplement their income and training by working shifts at one of the local emergency clinics. Interns receive a stipend for healthy insurance and professional liability insurance. Weekly academic discussions/ presentations are held and are supported by the surgical staff. Ten personal days may be used for interviews, continuing education, vacations, etc. Preference is given to applicants who are either currently enrolled in an internship or who previously completed a general small animal internship, although applications are accepted from any veterinarian or senior student eligible for Texas Licensure. Preferably interns must be licensed prior to beginning the internship year.
