General
Since the Fall 2003, the College of Veterinary Medicine and the Mays School of Business have offered an exciting new DVM/MBA Degree Program for students in the professional DVM curriculum. The College of Veterinary Medicine is excited to partner with the nationally recognized Mays Business School at Texas A&M University to offer the DVM/MBA Degree Program. Mays Business School and the Mays MBA Program are ranked among the best in the nation and world by U. S. News & World Report, Forbes Magazine, Financial Times, Business Week and others.
The DVM/MBA graduates will be prepared for leadership roles in many areas of veterinary medicine and business with specific MBA training in leadership, management, human resources, teambuilding, communications, marketing, finance, accounting, strategy, and technology. The Mays MBA launched an innovative new MBA curriculum in 2002, which is led by experienced Mays Business School faculty who rank among the best in the nation. The curriculum develops core competencies, teamwork and leadership skills. The program also allows for an optional self-designed specialization for the DVM student (may require enrollment in additional semesters). The goal of the DVM/MBA Degree Program is to produce leaders in veterinary medicine and business in a rapidly changing world. The Mays MBA Program web site (http://mba.tamu.edu) contains more detailed information on the MBA program and curriculum.
The DVM/MBA program allows two separate schedules for completion by DVM students. The first allows a DVM student to take a one-year deferment between the second and third years of the professional curriculum and complete the MBA coursework in 12 – 16 months and then return to the DVM curriculum to complete the third and fourth years for the DVM degree. The second schedule provides for the DVM student to complete the DVM degree in four straight years. The student would make application during the fourth year of the DVM curriculum for admission to the MBA Program. The student would then complete the MBA degree in 12 – 16 months following the DVM degree.
Upon completion of the first nine months of the MBA program, DVM students will have two additional courses remaining to complete the MBA program, the Business Consulting Project and the Business Negotiations course. The Business Negotiations course is usually offered in the summer and fall semesters and can be taken at any time. The Business Consulting Project is a six credit-hour course and is required to be 15 weeks in length. We envision that DVM students will work with a team of fellow DVM students on a project in coordination with the College of Veterinary Medicine and Mays Business School. Additionally, the Business Communications course will be completed through meeting the requirements of the first year curriculum and the Business Consulting Project.
