Position Details

  1. Appointee will be a voting member of the College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences (CVM) Executive Committee.
  2. Appointee may hold a part-time administrative appointment in the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station (TAES).
  3. Time distribution will be full-time administration.
  4. The position will carry a four-year term of appointment subject to the approval of university officials, with yearly renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance as determined by the Dean of the CVM. An informal review will be conducted at the end of the second year.
  5. Reappointment to a second four-year term will be subject to approval and agreement of the incumbent, the CVM and the University following a full four-year review.

Responsibilities of the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies

The Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies will be a spokesperson and representative for the CVM and TAES research programs at all levels (intra- and inter-collegiate, state, national, and international), actively promoting the research and graduate studies missions of the CVM, providing a vision for research initiatives and efforts by the CVM faculty, and fostering a research culture within the College.

1. Research

  • Recognize and facilitate interdepartmental linkages within the College’s Signature Programs
    • Keep abreast of CVM programs and individual CVM faculty research interests
    • Maintain a database of currently funded projects to facilitate development of multidisciplinary research groups and to access funding opportunities
    • Facilitate Program Project Grants, Center Grants, and other interdepartmental research initiatives
  • Work with the CVM administration and faculty to enhance research opportunities
    • In international programs in veterinary medicine and animal health in agriculture
    • For DVM students and undergraduate Biomedical Sciences (BIMS) students
  • Provide administrative oversight for intracollegiate research funds
  • Work with departments to develop and enhance research alliances with TAES and with other colleges at Texas A&M University (TAMU).
  • Support and enhance interdisciplinary faculties
  • Foster links with all levels of granting agencies; network at national research events and in Washington DC
  • Identify other sources of research funding and inform potentially interested faculty

  • Develop and enhance non-academic liaisons with producers, veterinarians, commodity groups, and industry
  • Facilitate faculty-driven research entrepreneurship
  • Facilitate the development of intellectual property and technology transfer through the TAMU Office of Technology Commericalization.
  • Provide administrative oversight to the Veterinary Medical Park and Image Analysis Laboratory, and serve as the CVM liaison for AALAC Accreditation
  • Serve as an ad-hoc member of relevant CVM committees and represent .the CVM and TAES on relevant TAMU committees
  • Hold primary responsibility for handling issues involving scientific misconduct not resolved at the departmental level.

2. Graduate Studies

  • Work with the department heads in graduate recruiting and program operations
  • Work with departments to increase the national status and standing of CVM graduate training programs
  • Provide administrative oversight of intracollegiate graduate support funds
  • Seek funding for graduate programs and alternative educational research programs (e.g. summer internships)
  • Facilitate and promote training grants in the CVM
  • Facilitate training experiences for graduate students
  • Coordinate cross-departmental graduate courses such as Theory of Research, Ethics in Research, special research training, and others
  • Maintain up-to-date records on grants submitted, graduate students, and funding opportunities for graduate students

Qualifications

  1. DVM/PhD, MD/PhD, or PhD degree with a recent history of continuous extramural funding
  2. National reputation in biomedical sciences
  3. Qualified for a tenured faculty appointment at the full professor level
  4. Experience with graduate education and graduate student training
  5. Outstanding communication skills
  6. Collaborative nature with broad perspective outside of his/her own discipline
  7. Past success in research team building and program enhancement
  8. Proven success in management of people (good people skills)
  9. A commitment to faculty and students
